More detailed information about the snowpack: 

Existing snow cover in this area is mostly inconsequential due to significant anchoring and disruption of the snow cover by large boulders (photo). The crust/facet/ice structure that was observed here may be representative of other avalanche start zones of similar aspect and elevation along this portion of the Sierra Crest. Without the disruption of large boulders, the supportable crust would make for an efficient bed surface.
