Morning observations from Andesite Peak

Last night's snow surface refreeze in this area was poor under forest canopy and decent on open slopes. Under forest canopy a weak refreeze of only the top two inches of the snowpack was observed. On open slopes, the top 4 to 5 inches of the snow surface had refrozen, but was only 1F hard at best.

A 9:30 am, the top 1 inch of the snow surface was wet snow at 8,100' on ESE aspect above treeline terrain. Supportable snow surface conditions were observed on open slopes in this area both above and near treeline prior to departure at 10:15 am. A few isolated areas of marginally supportable snow surface conditions were noted below treeline under dense forest canopy. Snow surface melt rates were slowed by sun obscuring mid level cloud cover. No areas of unstable wet snow were noted prior to departure from the area mid morning.

Significantly less cloud cover was noted over the Carson Range in the Mount Rose area mid morning.
