Numerous Avalanches in Low Elevation Terrain Along Hwy 89

When we left the Rubicon trailhead to drive back to the office it was snowing. However, once we got down to 6500 ft. the snow turned to rain. It kept raining for our entire drive back to the office and looked like it had been raining for much of the day at lower elevations. Once we drove north of Tahoe City on 89 we started seeing widespread avalanche activity on the N-NE-E facing slopes on the west side of the road. Almost anywhere there was a steep open slope there was an avalanche. We saw at least 11 similar avalanches. They all looked to be about 1 to 2 ft deep. They all had been rained on as well. It is likely that these all failed on the buried surface hoar layer. We did not see any of these on the way to Rubicon so they must have failed between 9 am and 1 pm today.  Photos are of several different avalanches in that corridor.
