Mt. Tallac - Breakable to supportable crust and summit ridge wind slabs.

From the trailhead, signs of the expected poor overnight refreeze below 7,500' were encountered with deep boot penetration through weak surface crust into wet snow. On skis, breakable crust conditions were experienced up to about 7,400'. Above this elevation, the crust became supportable. Around 7,800', signs of new snow accumulation were noted with around 2 inches in wind protected areas.

A short ways below the 9,200' summit ridge we began to encounter the expected small wind slabs, mostly 6 inches thick, but up to 10 inches thick in some areas. These slabs were weakly bonded to the crust below with the wind slab having upsidedown characteristics. These wind slabs were 4F+ hard at the surface, decreasing to F hard at the base of the slab on top of P+ hard crust. A testpit produced 2xECTN-24 on the wind slab. Cracking was limited to previously undercut areas. Along the summit ridge, wind slabs were noted not to extend more than about 30 feet down slope with the amount of slab development that had occurred at noon.
