Wind slab avalanche on Waterhouse Peak

As we made our way up to the final summit ridge of Waterhouse peak, I communicated with my team that I was going to go skin over to the wind loaded near treeline ridge to check for any windslabs. Although I knew we were not going to be skiing in near treeline terrain, my curiosity was piqued. 

I stepped over to the wind loaded slope and stomped around with my team out of the way of the small runout of the ridge. I could only get shooting cracks with hard stomps and undercutting the slope.

Later on in the day, we saw a fresh cornice near our transition area that had a 45˚ slope beneath it that appeared windloaded. I was able to lightly kick at the cornice and dislodge a child-sized block, which impacted the windloaded slope and caused the windslab to fracture and propagate about 50 feet. Note that the fracture did not propagate to the similar and adjacent slope next to the slope that slid. No one was near the runout of the slide (as planned), but there were at least two skin/ski tracks that the debris ran over.  The crown was approximately 6 inches deep.
