Persistent weak layer instabilities on Trimmer Peak

We attempted to ski the 11 on trimmer peak today but changed plans due to significant signs of instability. We first dug a pit at the location on the map and saw a very clean extended column test failing at 16 taps on the faceted crust that has been problematic. With a crystal card and hand lens, we could make some faceted crystals with flat edges and right angles. As we traversed across the bench from the pit location towards the 11 we observed ~20 different whumpfs. After digging the first pit our goal shifted to finding a sub 30-degree slope to safely descend. We traversed East across the 11 along a sub 30-degree bench and took care to practice good partner travel. After traversing over to the NE ridge descending off of Trimmer, we dug another pit on at ~9,000 feet. While this second pit was still north-facing, being near the ridge, it had a lot more sun exposure. This second pit failed similarly to the first ECTP15. We then descended some pleasant mellow N facing terrain and traversed back to the car. In both of the snow pits, the new snow had settled a fair amount and was much more cohesive compared to the previous 2 days.
