Loose wet slides and a deeper week layer

On our ride out meadow lake loop road we saw two recent loose wet avalanches. They were on an generally east aspect and started near some rocks. The largest one entrained a bit more snow than expected but looked to be realitivly harmless, however could push you into a terrain trap. The start zone was around 7,800-8000' we saw this around 1:00pm.

further on our ride we stopped on a west aspect to dig in the snow. The snow pack is generally strong with multiple crust layers.  However we identified a week layer that looked to be below the Jan 4 crust.  This layer failed in our compression test, and propagated in our ECT.  These results did not line up with what we were seeing, due to the fact that no other instabilities were observed associated with this week layer.  Several test slopes did not react, and we were unable to collapse this layer other than our two column tests. More data would need to be collected before determining if this layer could be reactive. Our column tests could be an outlier. But the layer was present and there was strong snow over weak snow.
