Decent overnight refreeze on Mt. Houghton

We toured upper elevation (9,400' to 10,400') E to SE aspects this morning on Mt. Houghton to examine last nights refreeze and today's snow surface melt rates. Starting our approach around 8,600' we found that the top 4 inches of the snowpack had refrozen last night. This same depth of refreeze was encountered all the way up to the summit of Mt. Houghton at just above 10,400'. There was some high level cloud cover over the Carson Range this morning, but it did not appreciable slow snow surface melt rates. During the morning hours, the top 1 to 2 inches of the snow surface melted while the remainder of the crust making up to the rest of last nights refreeze remained supportable to travel on skis up until our departure from avalanche terrain at 11:15 am. Exiting the area back down to 8,600' we encountered very slow surface snow that remained mostly supportable. Evidence of sizable recent loose wet avalanches was limited in this area. In general, snowcover is thinning rapidly in this area but coverage from rocks etc is still good for the most part. True S aspect terrain along with previously wind scoured areas are showing large amounts of bare ground.
