Tragedy Springs

 Starting around 0840 @ 8000', low lying cloud cover and warm temps produced misty conditions. There was soft wet surface snow but a breakable melt freeze crust right below it that was pretty widespread. There was no wind present throughout the day with no transporting snow observered at all. After traveling for a while we dug a pit @ 8100' on a N aspect that revealed some planar results from the shovel tilt test about 20cm down from the surface, this was followed by planar results within the CT but had no propagation within our ECT. We moved some more and dug a few more pits, some had similar planar results within the upper snowpack at different locations but still no results within the ECT. Digging a full profile pit @ 8500' on a NW aspect did not have results @ 20cm down but did have a SC Q3 on Jan. 22nd layer. Looking below the Jan. 22nd layer, facets were still present but was moist and somewhat compressible. Looking within the Dec.11th layer facets were still large (2-3mm) but seemed wet and compressible. As we traveled throughout the day, snowmachines did not produce any results of instabitlity from riding and there was no visible signs of instability within this region as well. Cloud cover did burn off leaving broken skies for the rest of the afternoon allowing for solar radiation to penetrate the snow but did not produce any roller balls or pinwheels. As we finished the day cloud cover was increasing in the west as the next low pressure is advancing but no precip was observed.
