Tragedy Springs Snowpit Observations

Our group rode in the Tragedy Springs area today in simple and challenging avalanche terrain and dug multiple snowpits.  Our observations are summarized below:

No avalanches were observed, and no one observed shooting cracks or wumpfing.  Test slopes did not show signs of instability.

Snowpits showed approximately 12-15 cm of new snow resting on recent crust.  ECTs showed propagation under this recent crust in approximately 50% of snowpits, typical results were 8-12 taps.  Facets exposed at the base of the snowpack were 4 finger hard.  Snow depth was up to 180 cm.

Previous wind loading was minimal, and ongoing wind loading was not observed while riding. Temperatures remained cool throughout the day.
