Calm day on Tallac

The questionably accurate thermometer in my car said it was 7 degrees F this morning driving to Tallac. Walking up the shaded road and my fingers agreed it was that cold but once we started skinning and the sun hit us we stripped down to tshirt layers for the rest of the climb. I was surprised by how calm it was. Winds were calm until a light east wind was felt when were right on the ridge around 9400 feet. Snow coverage is adequate down low but just barely, and the low density new snow is definitely hiding lurking hazards. Climbing up the ridge bordering north bowl we could see evidence of fresh snow that had melted off trees on the sunny side of the ridge. In the shade there was littlle evidence of settlement and snow was still present on branches. I left the skin track multiple times in open shady areas and felt around with the handle of my pole for soft snow beneath the fresh powder but only found a couple small areas where this was present (I almost always hit firm old snow. I did wonder if I travelled to a more due north aspect if I would have found more soft near surface facets under the fresh snow). The new snow remains very uncohesive and it is easy to find the firm old snow both with your pole while ascending and occassionally with a ski edge while descending. 

From the summit ridge there were wide views of Desolation Wilderness. I could not see any avalanche crowns. I also didn't see any crowns in the Tallac north bowl.
