Whumpfs and collapsing around Luther Pass

We steered clear of avy terrain on our tour. The previous snowpack had dwindled significantly in the Luther Pass area and buried/slightly buried hazards were abundant. New snow was generally unconsolidated, except for around near and above treeline areas where wind loading had formed slabs.

Localized collapsing was common on our tour and whumpfs and shooting cracks where more apparent above 8000' where a more contiguous weak layer was present and the new snow was more consolidated. Found anywhere from 12-24" of new snow on top of 8-16" of old faceted snow.
