Soft cold snow on Elephants Hump

    I toured up and around Elephants Hump today. In the parking lot I could see large banners of snow coming off the top of Red Lake peak across the way. It looked like every square inch of above treeline terrain on Red Lake peak had been wind effected and sustrugi was visible from a long ways away. Despite the high winds aloft the wind was very light below treeline in this area and it was causing low density snow to continously fall from the trees above. This made for a new snowfall affect in this area as I found anywhere fom a 1/2" to 3" of fresh snow on the surface. This snowfall filled in old skin tracks and was found on all aspects below 8500'. As I toured up and traveled around I dug pits on N,E,S,and West aspects. I completed a shovel tilt, shovel shear and compression tests at each spot in the top 60cms of the snowpack and found no signs of instabiltiy in any pit below 8500'. Once I got higher and in some the more exposed terrain wind effect and wind slabs were more present. There was also snow transporting across the surface in these areas from east to west. I could also get a good look at Elephants Back proper and it has been wind scoured down to the old crown line from the avalanche reported back in December. As I rode down and back to the truck there were no other signs of recent instability present along my way.
