No signs of instability at Elephant's Hump

We toured around Elephant's Hump today, and I was surprised to see how much less snow from Sunday was here compared to Charity Valley on Sunday. Today, there was only 1-3" of recent snow above the old snow. Even though the old snow was weak, we did not find anyplace today with a slab above it. We used current surface hoar (no longer standing due to winds) to determine where old surface hoar might be buried, and dug in these places. The buried surface hoar did not appear to be continuously intact in any of our profiles, but there was a continuous thin layer of small facets just under the surface hoar everywhere we looked, which was N, NE and E aspects from 7800-8800ft. With no slab above, we did not find signs of instability today. Winds did pick up in the afternoon, but we did not see any wind transport at our location or on neighboring peaks.
