Ophir Peak Snowpack Observations

Observations in the Chickadee Ridge and Ophir Peak area showed 8-18'' of recent settled storm snow above the 12/15 rain crust.  Near surface facets and near crust facets were both seen at different elevations in this area.  The depth of snow above the 12/15 rain crust is deeper in the Mt. Rose area than along the Sierra Crest.  The faceting also appears to be more advanced where shallower snow exists above this rain crust than in deeper areas.  3-8mm surface hoar was found throughout this area today.  Most of this surface hoar could be destroyed by warmer temperatures today and pre frontal winds building before the storm arrives early Friday morning. 

At a test pit location at lower elevation at 8360', N39.294644 W-119.892668.  We found approximately 8'' of recent storm snow on top of the 12/15 buried rain crust.  Facets were observed above the rain crust similar to the snowprofile that was done at higher elevation near the summit.  Uncertainty still exists as to what this near crust facet layer will do with additional snow load.
