Snowpack Obs from Nat Geo area

Extreme wind on the crest today, with swirly winds below. We found lots of wind affected snow on all exposed terrain, and smooth, excellent skiing below in sheltered areas. In an obviously wind loaded pocket we were able to initiate a 10' shooting crack (8600', SE aspect, on a ridge), and we observed 1 small natural wind slab avalanche on steep terrain (8800', NE aspect, 40+, under a cornice) that had more than likely failed within the past 4 hours. Aside from this, we found a generally stable snowpack that seems to be taking the new loading well. Last note- we also observed a weak, faceted layer underneath the recent storm snow. This layer does not currently show any of the typical signs of a slab problem, but we will watch it as more snow is loaded on top.
