Signs of ongoing deep slab instability on Elephant's Hump.

We examined this deeply fractured slope after seeing fracture lines from Hwy 88. This slope appeared to have deep slab fractured but not avalanched most likely on Sunday. The likely trigger point was an area of boot pack in rocky terrain. Fracture lines extended approx 500' away from this N aspect boot pack location around the corner to an NE to ENE avalanche path. The slope/path had a slope angle ranging from 20 to 35 degrees.

Snowpit data collected above the uppermost fracture line on a low angle portion of the slope indicated that the weak layer was still reactive and human triggerable in areas where it is less than 4 feet from the snow surface.

Probing across the top of the slope near fracture lines gave HS of 79 to 165 cm. Most areas were 125 to 165 cm with weak layer 100 to 120 cm below the snow surface.
