Brockway Summit

We dug a pit while touring near Brockway summit today at 7,200 feet on a north aspect. After stepping off of my skis to start digging, I immediately sunk down over my belly button.  We dug down to the old facet/rain crust layer. However, we could not isolate the back of the column more than a meter deep, which was a bit above the potential buried surface hoar layer. We conducted an extended column test on this upper section. ECTN12 that broke just below the denser snow that fell last night. No other failures were seen with this test. We then cut away the top 80cm of snow and isolated the back of the same ECT to below the facet/rain crust layer. While this is not a proper ECT, we treated it as such and saw no failures (ECTX). We also did a compression test in the same manner, which broke CT17 Q2 on the facet/rain crust layer. Jumping above the snow pit did not yield any failures or cracking. We also thoroughly jumped on some smaller test slopes with no results. Probing with our poles revealed a very upside-down snow at all elevations, but especially below 6,800 feet. We kicked above the ski track on a few slopes and only saw cracks that took the shortest line between the ski tip and the track below. None of these cracks were longer than 2 feet. 

Tree wells were a significant hazard today.
