unstable snow pit results on Rubicon Peak

We skied Rubicon Peak this morning choosing sheltered and sub 30 degree terrain to reduce our avalanche risk. During the ascent, we could feel some density changes within the new snow with our poles. There was a slightly more dense layer in the upper third of the snowpack on top of less dense storm snow. As we approached the summit we could feel a wind layer developing in the top 6 inches of snow and decided to pause and dig a snow pit. We found very unstable results along this wind layer with an extended column test propagating across the column after just 3 light taps. We decided to transition and proceed cautiously until in more wind-protected areas.
