Narrow corn window at Tallac

I followed the summer trail towards Cathedral Bowl, and though it was firm and supportable to foot travel, there was a noticeable lack of wind below treeline. This had me worried the snow would be getting soft earlier than anticipated, and that I might be late for it. However, as soon as I got off the summer trail and out of the trees, I felt a welcome breeze that was cooling the snow surface. Ski penetration was minimal, and I observed 8-10" of a frozen and supportable crust. I chose to ascend and descend a gully feature, but the steep walls of the gully were sheltering the line from the wind, which allowed the surface snow to melt from the strong sun and warm temps. 3-4" inches of wet surface snow was observed by 10am, though the underlying frozen layer remained supportable to both ski and foot travel. As soon as I exited the gully into the main South Bowl runout that was exposed to wind, the surface melt became limited to the top 1-2" of snow.

Pic 1: In the trees I could push the basket side of my ski pole past the supportable crust layer. The snow was impenetrable to skis on my approach, and was still supportable but sticky on my exit at 11am.

Pic 2: Lots of texture in the snow above treeline, which may develop into sun cups with continued warm temps.

Pic 3: The main South Bowl had previous tracks and fallen cornice chunks, but there were still smooth lines available.

Pic 4: Nearing my transition point around 10am, the snow in a wind sheltered gully was becoming wet 3-4" from the surface.
