Scattered Wind Slabs near Spooner Junction

Took a quick pre-work solo tour up a hill near Spooner Junction. I first ascended up a northwest ridge, where I found variable snow surfaces, with a thin (1 inch) wind crust being on the surface along most parts of this aspect. After taking the ridge up some way, I turned and finished my ascent by traversing a west facing slope that was mostly open with some scattered trees. On this slope, I observed several small (about 3-4 ft diameter) wind slabs piled on north facing pockets of the slope. Orientation of the wind slabs suggest they were deposited largely by winds out of the south and southeast. I was on a low-angle slope and the wind slabs were small, so I felt comfortable testing the stability of one of the slabs. The slab didn't collapse while approaching it, but just a slight hop on my skis yielded the crack in the photo. The slab was thin, about 3-4 inches thick. I gave an extra few jumps and the wind slab eventually released, breaking off and sliding down slope about 5 feet. I felt that there was a high possibility of the slab releasing if skied over during a descent. While the wind slabs in this area were of low consequence, their orientation along the middle of a slope was unusual. Similar wind slabs in avalanche terrain could be a problem as long as these slabs remain active.
