Storm cycle avalanches on Tallac

We went up Tallac today (1/2/23) to see how things looked after the recent storm cycle and before the next storms comes in. Blowing snow was visible on the drive and we found fresh wind slab development in above and near treeline locations. It was evident that the wind has been blowing from all directions in the past 36 hours. We did not find any surface hoar.

There was widespread evidence of avalanche activity that occurred during New Years Eve storm on all aspects and elevations. Much of the treed terrain on the north side of the main skin track had evidence of a late storm slide and when we went down by Cascade Bowl it was clear that had also avalanched at some point on the 31st. The snow surface was very undulating with a variety of depths of fresh snow over a firm rain affected layer.

On the exit towards Pomo we saw the final ~1000' had slid late in the storm. It was dust on crust skiing conditions with only 4-8" of cold unconsolidated snow on a very firm rain crust. The debris at the tow of the slide was very deep ranging from 6 feet, to what was easily 15+ feet in many spots. (see photos)

It'll be interesting to see how the incoming snow bonds to the low density snow that's resting on the very firm rain crust.
