Variable conditions in Rose Knob zone

Toured out to Rose Knob today from Mt Rose Meadows, taking a route where we covered most aspects below, at, and above treeline. Generally speaking, found cold and variable wind-affected snow (punchy wind slab, soft deposits, and firm supportable wind scoured areas) on N, NE, and NW aspects, even below treeline which we hadn't expected. Cornices that had formed on ridge lines above N facing slopes have been peeling away in places (or even collapsing), leaving large cracks and gaps which we gave a wide berth. S and SW facing slopes above treeline were highly sun and wind affected, with even bigger penitentes than last week. SE facing slopes were slightly less affected. We skied a firm wind scoured E-facing slope  on Rose Knob peak that made for the most consistent conditions we found all day. Some areas on SE facing slopes had begun to melt out to the ground. Light wind out of the East today but overall very sunny with less cloud cover than expected.
