Avy 2 Class

Today, we started off from the Little Truckee Summit trail head at about 10:30 AM. We traveled to about 8000'. We started to find softer conditions as the day went on. Variable snow is widespread. When we stopped to dig a pit on a NW aspect to check the layers and do a CT, we found multiple crusts in the upper snow pack. We found a weak layer about 23 cm from the top of the snow, but it had no propigation. The snow pack was 285 cm in depth, with 1 1/2 mm facets. The weather was 43* F, and it was calm and clear. On the ride out, solar aspects made softer snow. Surprisingly today, we were able to find some soft spots, although there was a lot of ice where trees were, making it hard to travel sometimes.
