Red Lake peak

     We toured up Red Lake peak today and encountered a variety of snow quality but was primarily unconsolidated powder-like conditions. At the trailhead there was ~60cm of snow and 90cm above 8500'. Below tree line there was some small pockets of wind effected snow and pockets of surface hoar starting to form. Near tree line and above, wind effect became more prevalent and  in exposed areas, slab conditions had formed. Slabs were found on NW-N-NE-E aspects and thickness of these slabs was anywhere from 3" and up to 8" near the summit. I dug my pit on a N aspect near 9000' and it was right side up but had a rain crust at the bottom with graupel above it and rounded/facets grains below it.  Around ~9000' feet there was evidence of a widespread riming event that covered trees, brush, and rocks with up to an 1" of ice. Near the summit I found a safe cornice to jump on but was very consolidated and very stubborn to release. When it did it released large chunks of debris. The ski down consisted of some denser wind affected snow above tree line that transitioned into low density powder to the lake. My party did scrape rocks along the way while taking deeper turns.
