Description of Snow, Weather, and Avalanche Conditions:

We dug a test pit in a sheltered spot at 8100 ft on a NW aspect, looking for surface hoar buried 6-12 inches down. Two compression tests both showed clean (sudden collapse) fractures 6 inches below the surface. The snow above the fractures was more consolidated (4F) than the snow below (F), but it was difficult to get a good look at the failure layer. We suspected surface hoar at the failure layer...but we couldn't find it amidst the soft snow.
