Shirley Canyon, Windslabs

Touring out of the Shirley Canyon area we observed widespread windslab from our recent snowfall, the windslab was reactive with limited to no propogation potential. Digging hasty pits on our tour we were able to get results easily within the first 15 - 20cm of new snow- these areas of windslab were between 4F- and F+, the snow was right side up in our observed area for the bulk of our tour and provided high quality skiing and riding. At 7500' on a north aspect we measured approximately 270cm of snow with 118cm of rightside up snow sitting ontop of a robust rain layer from our last big clear snow event. Throughout the afternoon quick bursts of snow showers occured with no measurable precipitation and we skied under overcast or obscured skies all day. Below 7300' and around 1430 on our decent the snow had a noticable change in ski quality turning into more of a "hot pow" type consistency due to freezing levels. The existing windslabs will be something to watch as we get our next round of snow loading ontop of them.
