Some soft snow, some not so soft snow on Maggies

Skied the South Couloir of Maggie's, dropping at 11:00. Approached from Bayview, after walking the road from the Upper Eagle Point campground, which is where the road is gated. The approach was on very firm, supportable snow, on mostly NE facing slopes, which necessitated ski crampons, and almost required boot crampons. The surface of the couloir had softened nicely, and made for enjoyable skiing, although the right wall which has a slightly more easterly tilt, was still slightly firm. The couloir had clearly released a sizable loose wet avalanche recently, as had the Dogleg, and many of the other slopes on the south side of Maggie's. Some of the pinwheels in the debris were >6 feet in diamter. As a result, roller ball activity during the time I was out was minimal.  Booted back up the Dogleg, which was mostly supportable, with a few rotten sections. Traversed back to the N summit to attempt to ski the NW couloir, but even after waiting until nearly 2:00, the surface was still rock solid, and seemed to be several hours away from seeing enough sun to soften. Snow is not continuous all the way to the top, and would require walking down through some rocks and sand to the continuous snow. Turned tail and skied the SE slope of Maggie's north back to the car, which had softened in areas with sun exposure. Even despite warm ambient air temperatures, slopes in the shade, even down low, remained frozen.  On the way, I peeked at the N facing slopes directly above 89, and found a massacre zone, with evidence of massive natural activity that left 3-4 foot deep runnels interspersed with massive chunks of frozen debris. I also found surface hoar- growing on the crust, on the shadier slopes up to 10 mm in size in the morning, and in select areas, this still existed and was upright on my exit. Looking into desolation, there are large crowns and debris piles everywhere, including a glide crack on the E facing slope directly above Eagle Lake.
