Buried surface hoar and weather observations at Proletariat Bowl

On a tour of the Proletariat Bowl we dug several quick pits to search for the presence of buried surface hoar. It appeared in just one pit dug just below ridgelige on a north aspect, down about 30 cm. Grains were smallish 4 mm to 5 mm. CT tests in the pit produced no results on that layer. There were some moderate failures in the recently deposted layers on top of the SH.

Snowfall through the day was S-1 with a few intense flurries around mid day. The precipitation included a large fraction of 3 mm to 4 mm graupel.

Winds at the ridgetops were moderate, gusting to strong. Wind transported snow was light to moderate. Sky was overcast early and cleared to 4/8 by 1600.
