More detailed information about the snowpack: 

Our party dug a pit over 4' deep on a northerly aspect at 8,000'.  Multiple hard hits did not produce a failure on an isolated column of shovel width.  No signs of significant instability were noted during the outing aside from surface sluffing while skiing steeper slopes.   North facing snow was still unconsolidated and crust free even in open areas.  We traveled between 6400 and 8000'.
