More detailed information about the snowpack: 

Shaded aspects have a variety of good unconsolidated snow and surface crusts that are supportable and breakable.  Solar aspects did soften somewhat by mid day with intermittent sun, around 8000' seemed to be the sweet spot.  Below 7500' the snowpack was mostly punchy on solar aspects.
