More detailed information about the snowpack:

A firm, thick, refrozen rain crust exists on most of the slopes in this area. This crust could support a person's weight in many areas. On top of this crust .5 to 1 inch of soft recent snow remained. Below this crust the snowpack showed signs of water moving all the way through the snowpack to the ground. The once faceted snow grains continue to round at all levels of the snowpack. Some moisture that had not reforzen remained in the layer closest to the ground. The layers above this had already refrozen and were on their way to becoming one solid cement like layer of snow.
