Avalanche from the night of Jan 18. Pit dug adjacent to this avalanche. Jan 18 surface hoar layer visible in the pit wall. Signs of E wind scouring as we moved into open areas. Large new surface hoar that formed last night. Only notable in that last night was very windy on the ridgetops, not typical formation conditions for SH. Forecaster

Wind effect and wind slabs on Mt. Tallac

Desolation Wilderness Area (including Emerald Bay)
Intermittent waves of cloud cover on the ascent. Hard melt freeze crusts on solar aspects above 7600'. Settlement cracks in below and near tree line terrain. Small wind slab release on ski cut. Planar result on shovel shear on wind slab. Buried surface 30cm down @ pit location. Moderate to strong east winds transporting snow off the summit. Professional Observer

Natural loose dry observed mid morning. Skier triggered loose dry in the mid afternoon hours. ECTP-8 on Jan 18 surface hoar layer at pit location (noted lat/long on map) The maximum extent of cracking we observed today on the SH layer. Buried SH found in hand pits on this E aspect terrain from the ridgetop down into open areas below treeline.. NE winds blowing snow on the top of Basin Peak. Forecaster
