More detailed information about the snowpack: 

On south facing slopes at 3:30 there was 2" to 3" of soft corn snow on top of a 4" supportable crust.  Colder overnight temps, radiational cooling, cloud cover during the day and light east winds all contributed to the surface MF crust being supportable this late in the day.
